Life in General

To Sum Up: You look young, I’m having fun.

Tonight is my last day in the single bedroom of our apartment, meaning we are 1/5th done with our study abroad experience.  It seems like yesterday my roommates and I were drawing cards to see who got the lone solo bedroom first.  I was happy at the time to get some privacy, but now am rather excited to move out of this depressing, empty, lonely bedroom, but I can’t believe this whole thing is 20% over.

I apologize for not keeping everyone at home updated.  Still, I’m not going to waste my time writing narrative posts about what I do every day, but a few highlights thus far have been my trip to Florence and my first European futbol game.  You can read great summaries and view pictures of both here, and here, respectively.

Trying to explain how much I’ve enjoyed these past 3 weeks would be a waste of time. However, Saturday night in Florence the other week probably does the best job of summarizing why I’ve had so much fun so far:
After a great steak dinner and before going out for the night we were unsure of what to do.  Me and the other 12 people I went on the trip with decided to get some alcohol and lock ourselves in our hostel room and get to know each other. While what we all talked about those 3 hours can never be repeated, I came out feeling like I had made 12 new best friends.

Looking back that weekend was one of the best of my life.  The museums in Florence were good, the churches and palaces were breathtaking, and the nightlife was also fun.  However, examining those individual qualities of Florence I wouldn’t expect the best weekend of my life would be the result.

I realized in Florence where and what you do is only half the solution, the other half is who you’re with.  When you combine the amazing sights, great food and my 12 new best friends the best weekend of my life makes perfect sense.

Now I can’t wait to get out of this single bedroom and move in with a new friend, because spending a semester in Rome living alone is only half as fun as it should be.

Just to keep my Mom happy I’ll let you know a little more about my experience thus far:

  • I’m going to Prague tomorrow for the weekend.  The rest of February follows suit as I’m going to Venice, either Brussels or Budapest and then Amsterdam.
  • My roommates are pretty cool.  We get along. We keep our apartment relatively clean.
