A Case Of Late March Depression
As a first time writer I would like to introduce myself. I am Rob, Kyle’s younger brother, I am a sophomore at York High School, in Elmhurst. I’ve been born and raised about 30 miles outside of Chicago, and as a west-suburban teenager, and inspired future journalist I hope you enjoy my voice about the world, the way I see it:
In 2005, I witnessed UNC forward, Sean May single-handedly rip away the University of Illinois’ only shot at a National Championship thus far in my lifetime. Three days ago I watched the Tar Heels pummel Tom Izzo’s Spartans in a landslide, 89-72 giving UNC the reigns to the National Title. In those four years Roy Williams has brought two National titles to Chapel Hill while Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski has done nothing but a couple of pathetic sweet sixteen runs for Blue Devils. Besides the gold medal he won while coaching USA in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but as a Duke fan, I don’t see how this benefits me in March –when it really counts. Coach K, this is me calling you out: stop worrying about your health insurance commercials, your multi-million dollar salary that you get from overly wealthy alumni, and the Olympic Team, and start worrying about winning a National Championship. The Tar Heels are reigning champions in not only the nation, but more specifically in North Carolina.
You need to get your act together and bring another championship to the Cameron Crazies. In recent years I’ve seen you, and your undersized Blue Devils be out coached, and out-played a countless number of times in March, giving players like Gerald Henderson –a NBA-Caliber guard –a collegiate résumé of a single ACC championship, and multiple seasons of ‘under achieving’ in March. Roy Williams and the Tar Heels have become the new power house of college basketball, and after the 2008-09 season when UNC beat Duke three times, how could they not be? Looking back on Hansbrough’s career, never losing at Cameron Indoor Stadium, makes me wonder after UNC has been dominating Duke in recent years, is the cross-town rivalry of Duke and UNC still as intense as it once was? But games similar to the 2007-08 season when Duke was hosting UNC, Gerald Henderson was ejected from the game after breaking Tyler Hansbrough’s nose on a hard foul. Hansbrough left the game in tears and the rivalry was renewed, and both teams were out for blood more than ever. But, regardless of how intense the rivalry is, if duke doesn’t start beating the Tar Heels, especially in Krzyzewskiville, UNC will hold the reigns to North Carolina basketball for a long time and Duke will be seen as the second team in North Carolina. So Coach K, take back Krzyzewskiville, and start beating the Tar Heels.
