Jesus of Suburbia
On Saturday afternoon i saw a brilliant performance in Derrick Rose and
Company. And i couldn’t be happier about it. Rose led the upset victory over the defending champs with 36
points, breaking Jordan’s record of points in a playoff game as a rookie as
he put up 35 in 1986. The kid has been a big game player his whole life.
Just over two years ago he won the Illinois State Championship at
Simeon High School in 2007. Proving his superiority in the state of
Illinois he was recruited from every school in the country, as he enrolled
at Memphis in 2008 he went on to lead the Tigers to NCAA Championship game in
2008. Rose has been proving he is number one for his whole life -but what
about everyone else?
As Rose lead Simeon High School to a State Championship and beyond, he
was widely known as a ”Five-Star Recruit.” There are a bunch of
web sites and blogs regarding high school recruits mostly for football,
basketball, and baseball. players are ranked on their skill and potential
on a, “Zero-Star to Five-Star,” scale. Five-Stars meaning you are the best
of the best. But I am not here to write about these kids, i want to address
the Zero-Star recruits:
I go to York High School as a sophomore and a basketball player. And
my best friend is a kid named Will Sullivan, and he is listed as a Zero-Star
recruit on Rivals.com. Sullivan started on the Varsity team as a freshman
in 2008. In the spring he plays for the Illinois Wolves -one of the most
prestigious AAU teams in the state of Illinois. And he went on to have a break out year as
a sophomore averaging just over 15 points per game in 2009. He had
All-Conference stats as he lead the Dukes to a first round “David versus
Goliath” upset-victory in the 2009 State Tournament against a extremely
talented Foreman team. That night Sullivan showed the world he was the best
player on the court as he had a career-high 32 points against 3 Division I
athletes on the opposing Foreman squad. Everyday I see Sullivan play like a
Five-Star recruit. And it makes me wonder, why do I see zero stars next to
his name every time i look at his page on Rivals.com?
It’s because high school basketball journalists don’t care about
academic-based suburban high schools, the exact mold that York fits.
Rivals.com wants to write about the Derrick Rose’s and the Carmelo Anthony’s
of today, the kids that have God given NBA talent from the moment they were
born as they showcase them in their inner-city schools, like Simeon High School,
and Oak Hill Academy. As i looked at the Preseason rankings for this year’s
High School basketball season in Illinois i didn’t see one suburban high school in the Top 20. And when i look
in the Top 100 recruits on Rivals.com i haven’t seen on kid from a suburban
school, every team and every player is from the inner-city with God given
talent.
Getting recruited by Big Time Schools, and becoming a so called,
“Five-Star Recruit,” isn’t just about a good work ethic, it is very well
dictated by the jersey you wear on game nights. Over the last few years
I’ve played about forty games with Sullivan, and we’ve lost just one. He is a
Zero-Star Recruit with Five-Star talent, and there are a a hand full of
players that fall under the same category as him. And when Sullivan and
players alike prove they are better basketball players than some DI talent I
want to see some stars next to their name when i go to Rivals.com
